Die \u00c4ra der Papierverpackungen mit Kunststofffenster neigt sich dem Ende zu. Was lange als nachhaltige L\u00f6sung galt, erweist sich bei genauerem Hinsehen als Problem: ein Materialmix, nicht recycelbar, technisch \u00fcberholt. Jetzt kommt die Alternative \u2013 ausgerechnet aus einem altbekannten, bislang untersch\u00e4tzten Material: Glassine.<\/p>\n

Glassine by Siopack\u00ae<\/sup> is a multi-effective barrier coating for which a patent application has been filed. In combination with conventional glassine paper, this creates a paper-based display packaging material that is highly transparent and protective and is designed for recycling in the paper stream. The coating gives the paper the necessary clarity and barrier effect \u2013 making glassine a real alternative to plastic display packaging for the first time. The technology was developed by the Saarland-based company nanopool, which has specialized in the functional refinement of surfaces for years.<\/p>\n

Bislang galt Kunststoff als alternativlos, wenn Produkte sichtbar und zugleich gesch\u00fctzt verpackt werden sollten. Papierl\u00f6sungen wie Glassine galten zwar als Alternative zu Kunststoff, waren technisch jedoch nicht ausreichend transparent \u2013 und damit f\u00fcr viele Anwendungen ungeeignet.<\/p>\n

With Glassine by Siopack\u00ae<\/sup>, this changes fundamentally: the applied barrier not only gives the paper a previously unattained transparency, it also makes it barrier-capable against oxygen \u2013 and is designed for recycling in the existing paper cycle.<\/p>\n

“We haven’t simply improved a product \u2013 we have rethought a packaging standard,” explains Saskia Lokermans-Schwindt of the SiOPack\u00ae<\/sup> development team.<\/p>\n

The first applications show how great the potential of the technology is \u2013 especially in food retail. In a pilot project, Glassine by SiOPack\u00ae<\/sup> was successfully used for classic self-service bread roll bags with a viewing window. The result in this pilot project: the plastic content could be completely replaced, and no loss of freshness or product protection was observed. At the same time, the new transparency can help reduce theft in the self-service area \u2013 an often underestimated but economically relevant advantage for retailers.<\/p>\n

Many retail chains and packaging manufacturers are currently trying to replace plastic viewing windows with pure glassine paper \u2013 out of an understandable desire for more sustainability. But the limit quickly becomes apparent: pure glassine is by far not as transparent as plastic \u2013 or as glassine with Glassine by SiOPack\u00ae<\/sup>. The visibility of the contents thus remains limited \u2013 and with it the function as a sales-promoting design element or control aid in retail.<\/p>\n

The baked goods sector in particular offers massive leverage for reducing plastic packaging: in Europe alone, several billion bread roll bags with plastic windows are used every year.
