Resource-saving hygiene in supermarkets: Protection even during peak virus season!

Hygienesicherheit in Supermärkten mit Nanopool NP® Oberflächenbeschichtungen

A major supermarket chain relies on liquid glass from Nanopool to protect the health of customers and staff.

Italy/ Germany 2022

When gingerbread and autumn decorations start appearing in supermarkets, the main season for many viral diseases begins due to cooler and wetter weather. Both COVID-19 and influenza viruses cast a shadow over the cosy season, compelling the retail sector to actively safeguard the health of both its customers and staff. To sustainably enhance hygiene safety in their stores, a major retail chain is now successfully utilising the germ-repellent coating technology Bacterlon®.

When staff shortages due to COVID-19 and flu illnesses push companies to their limits and customers minimise their time in stores, an effective solution for achieving the highest hygiene standards becomes invaluable. While face masks offer protection, contact surfaces play a crucial role. However, increased cleaning and disinfection cycles consume valuable resources in terms of time and cost, as the continuous cleaning and disinfecting of contact surfaces is a Sisyphean task: germs can easily resettle and spread, especially during the autumn/winter virus season.

A major European supermarket chain is rethinking hygiene safety by targeting the basis of smear infections: preventing the adhesion and spread of microorganisms on surfaces. This is made possible by an ultra-thin functional barrier layer, through which the German family-owned company Nanopool pursues an effective and resource-efficient approach:

The high-performance Bacterlon® coating gives surfaces germ-repellent properties and is sustainable in two ways: firstly, the protective coating boasts an extraordinary lifespan; secondly, Bacterlon® makes surfaces so resistant to dirt and germs that cleaning with warm water alone has been proven sufficient to achieve clinical hygiene standards. This enables Bacterlon® to significantly reduce the use of cleaning agents while simultaneously enhancing hygiene. Touching the treated objects poses no risk, as neither the coating itself nor the embedded long-term active ingredients can detach from the surfaces.

Safety for customers and staff

Initially, test surfaces in a branch of the European grocery retailer were coated with Bacterlon®. The relevant areas were tested for bacteria using swab tests both before and after treatment. An independent laboratory found that the detectable germ count was not only significantly lower after treatment but had further decreased approximately six weeks post-coating. The long-term effect of Bacterlon® was thus repeatedly proven: bacterial growth could be reduced by up to 99% thanks to the easily applicable coating.

Following these positive results, the supermarket chain decided to expand the treatment across the pilot branch: all shopping trolley handles, portable product scanners, refrigerator handles, touchscreen self-service checkouts, fruit and vegetable scales, the PVC butcher’s door in the staff area, as well as tables, a drinks dispenser, and a microwave in the public refreshment area are now coated with the highly effective Bacterlon® protection.

Worth emulating: Well-being through safety

This not only significantly raises health standards but also provides a sense of security for customers and staff, as the supermarket branch has equipped all treated surfaces with informational notices about the hygiene treatment with Bacterlon®. This increased sense of well-being for customers is likely to play a significant role in their future choice of supermarkets in the region.
