A nanotechnological product against corked wine
It is often a great disappointment for the wine drinker if a good drop of wine planned for the evening has got a musty-earthy taste. For wine growers is this a world-wide problem which can not even be solved by glass or plastic corks. There is talk of the so-called “corked” wine. The company Nanopool located in the area of Saarland offers now for the first time an innovative solution for this cork problem.
According to estimations of the EU-commission the Europe-wide loss caused by corked wine amounts to 500 million EUR per year. Wine-growers as well as consumers fear similarly the so-called “corked” wine. The main causer of the classic musty cork smell is 2,4,6-Trichoranisol (TCA). This substance has a strong smell and only some billionth gram per litre are sufficient to ruin a good wine. The development of a cork as well as the development of a wine can cause this musty odour. The wine industry is looking for solutions since many years. But neither screw caps nor glass- or plastic corks could prevail so far.
The company Nanopool offers a simple and brilliant solution for this problem. This company succeeded to develop an ultra-thin layer, which is applied on the cork surface before corking. The nano layer has a double function. For one thing certain kinds of mildews causing the cork smell are killed, for another thing the phenol- and chloranisol compounds, that arises before corking due to the manufacturing process of the cork, are immobilized and its extraction into the wine is stopped.
Ralf Jürgens, Senior Engineer of Nanopool GmbH, refers to numerous investigations concerning the reliability of this method: “We carried out microbiological tests and investigations at accredited institutes, who can all confirm the antimicrobial effect of the nanopool-coating.” These coatings are easy to apply and can be inserted at each cork production or at wine growers and bottle fillers.
Mr. Sascha Schwindt, Director of Nanopool GmbH, refers explicitly to the food safety of the coating: “The product fulfils of course the requirements of the food safety and has no influence on the maturation and taste of the wine. The coating is invisible and essentially undetectable. The feel of the cork is not at all changed. A wine drinker can not identify a refined cork. Tests have shown that all technical requirements of the bottle fillers like density, jacking force, pulling force etc. are not affected by the coating and so no changes in the processing are given.
The nanopool GmbH has herewith the answer for the long-lasting search of the wine industry for alternatives to the natural cork, which meet the quality requirements and the aesthetic expectations of the wine consumers.
