Nalbach. The Saarland-based company nanopool has developed a process for “refining” germ-prone surfaces in care homes for the elderly with an ultra-thin glass film. The results of a microbiological study at the AWO senior residence Primsm\u00fchle in Nalbach give cause for hope: the number of pathogens on surfaces previously treated with the nanopool product “Bacterlon\u00ae<\/sup><\/strong>” \u2013 such as floors, furniture, door handles, light switches and handrails \u2013 was reduced significantly, in some cases by up to 95 percent.<\/p>\n

“Infecties zijn in verzorgingshuizen voor ouderen van bijzonder belang,” zei Saskia Schwindt van nanopool bij de presentatie van de studie. Gemeenschappelijk wonen brengt altijd een risico op overdracht van kiemen en infecties met zich mee. “Voor een gezond mens is dat meestal geen probleem. Voor oudere of zwakkere mensen kan het echter een risico op ziekte vormen.” Daarnaast blijft het aantal hardnekkige kiemen zoals MRSA stijgen. Ook het norovirus, dat in de herfst en winter steeds weer toeslaat in verzorgingshuizen, vormt een gevaar. De minuscule virussen kunnen tot zes weken overleven op deurklinken, bekleding en andere oppervlakken. “Daarom is het zeer belangrijk de verspreiding van bacteri\u00ebn te voorkomen terwijl ze nog in de kolonisatiefase zijn, zodat ze zich niet kunnen vermenigvuldigen.”<\/p>\n

Dit inzicht bracht de AWO-regioafdeling Saarland ertoe een innovatieve stap te zetten. Aangemoedigd door het initiatief van de Saarlandse minister van Volksgezondheid Georg Weisweiler om de MRSA-ziekteverwekker te bestrijden, stemde de vereniging ermee in samen met nanopool een proef te starten in de seniorenresidentie in Nalbach. “We wilden zien of het mogelijk was onze hygi\u00ebnemaatregelen met behulp van nanopool verder te verbeteren,” zei Paul Quirin, voorzitter van AWO Saarland.<\/p>\n

In the spring, numerous surfaces in the senior residence were coated with “Bacterlon\u00ae<\/sup>” by certified nano-technicians. Initial so-called contact plate tests were encouraging: the germ load on the treated surfaces had dropped by almost half, even though the cleaning staff – as specified by nanopool – used only warm water for cleaning. The next step was to obtain conclusive certainty. For twelve weeks, from the beginning of September to the beginning of December, everything was systematically checked at regular intervals and the samples were analyzed in the laboratory, under the professional supervision of independent microbiologists.<\/p>\n

“De resultaten van de studie hebben onze verwachtingen bevestigd,” zegt een verheugde Saskia Schwindt. Nanopool kan deze ervaring immers ook elders benutten. Het innovatieve product van het in Schwalbach gevestigde bedrijf, dat in heel Europa actief is, wordt bijvoorbeeld gebruikt in ziekenhuizen in Engeland en in de SHG-klinieken.<\/p>\n

Voor AWO-bedrijfsdirecteur Wolfgang Hermann liggen de voordelen voor de hand. “De bewoners van de seniorenresidentie blijven langer gezond en hoeven daardoor minder vaak naar het ziekenhuis.” En op de kosten van reinigingsmiddelen zouden enkele procenten kunnen worden bespaard.<\/p>\n

AWO is now considering using the Bacterlon\u00ae<\/sup> technology in other of its senior care homes as well.<\/p>\n
