Glassine by SiOPack®: A Paper-Based Alternative for Window Packaging

The era of plastic windows in packaging appears to be coming to an end. More and more companies – especially in the food retail sector – face the challenge of finding packaging solutions that work without plastic windows, yet make no compromises on product protection or visibility. This is exactly where Glassine by SiOPack® comes in: a new technological development that upgrades conventional glassine paper with a transparent barrier coating, creating a genuine alternative to plastic window packaging.

What was long considered technically difficult – full transparency combined with an oxygen barrier, product protection and recyclability – is designed to become reality with this innovation. The liquid-based coating is patent-pending and can be applied both inline during paper production and offline via flexographic printing lines. That means: depending on the existing equipment, little or no retooling, no new supply chains and no fundamental system disruption. The potential of this development is already evident in food retail. In a pilot project, classic self-service bakery bags with viewing windows were switched to Glassine by SiOPack®. The result: the plastic content was replaced completely, with no loss of freshness, hygiene or visibility – and as a side benefit, the clear view of the product also improves theft prevention in self-service areas.

Plain glassine paper is being tested in many places as a substitute for plastic windows, but often fails due to its lack of transparency. Glassine by SiOPack®, on the other hand, gives paper a new quality previously reserved for plastic. In the bakery sector in particular, this presents an enormous opportunity: in Europe alone, several billion bakery bags with plastic viewing windows are used every year. Switching to a paper-based window could considerably reduce the use of plastic viewing windows in this segment.

Yet the range of applications extends far beyond bakery bags. Whether cereal packaging, teas, detergent pods, cosmetic products or pharmaceutical items – with Glassine by SiOPack®, many products previously packaged in plastic or opaque materials can now be presented visibly while remaining paper-based. The visibility of the contents becomes not just functional but a design element: colours, fill levels and product shapes become recognisable without resorting to print or plastics. Packaging becomes a stage, not just a container. This opens up new creative freedom for brands – attention-grabbing and relevant with regard to upcoming packaging regulations.

The solution is also particularly relevant for food service chains and mail-order retail. Portion sachets for sauces or refill systems can be designed to be just as clearly visible, hygienic and paper-based as herbal teas or botanical preparations on the pharmacy shelf. Customers see immediately what they are getting – a transparency that builds trust and supports the purchase decision. The technology has also shown that it is not limited to viewing windows: with a paper-based barrier, SiOPack® has developed a beverage cup without plastic coating – another example of how versatile functional paper packaging can be.

To ensure the scalability and availability of the solution, intensive discussions with leading paper manufacturers and packaging converters are already under way. The goal is to integrate Glassine by SiOPack® seamlessly into existing production processes – efficiently, economically and with low market-entry barriers for all parties. Initial test runs with industrial partners indicate that the technology can be used on an industrial scale.

Glassine by SiOPack® is more than a new packaging material. It is an impulse for real change in the packaging world. Depending on the existing equipment, little or no conversion effort and processing on established lines – combined with a clear vision: rethinking window packaging – paper-based and economical. For brands that want to stand out at the point of sale while replacing plastic windows in their packaging, now is the right time to make the switch. Plastic window packaging is yesterday. The future has no window – it is one.
