How an unassuming type of paper is replacing plastic window packaging
A transparent window made of paper – long considered technically unfeasible.
Now, with Glassine by SiOPack®, that leap has been achieved: for the first time, parchment-like glassine becomes so transparent and protective thanks to a patent-pending barrier coating that it can replace plastic in window packaging – while remaining fully recyclable in the paper stream.
A pilot project in the food retail sector highlights the potential: bread bags with plastic windows were successfully replaced. The result: less plastic, the same level of product protection, and enhanced theft prevention thanks to improved visibility.
The technology is industrially scalable, market-tested, and suitable for high volumes – with no need for machinery upgrades.
In Europe alone, replacing just 10% of plastic window packaging could save over 150,000 tonnes of plastic per year.
