The nanopool glass coating is based on patented nanotechnology using silicon dioxide. The coating is only a few nanometres thick and does not affect the feel or transparency of the surface – yet it creates a long-lasting hydrophobic effect.
Water, limescale, oil and dirt can no longer adhere. As a result, surfaces stay clean for longer – and cleaning becomes significantly easier. This applies to glass, glass ceramics, tiles, enamel or ceramic – for both indoor and outdoor use.

At Therme Gastein, the challenge was to protect large interior glass surfaces from limescale, dirt and constantly high humidity – without compromising transparency or aesthetics.

Nano glass refinement is a cutting-edge surface treatment using nanotechnology. It involves applying an ultra-thin, transparent protective layer to glass or ceramic surfaces. This layer is just a few nanometres thick – around 500 times thinner than a human hair – and does not alter the appearance or texture of the surface.
Nevertheless, it provides new properties: the surface becomes water- and dirt-repellent (hydrophobic), easier to clean, and more resistant to environmental impacts.

“Hydrophobic” means water-repellent. A hydrophobic glass coating prevents water from spreading or soaking into the surface. Instead, it forms droplets that roll off effortlessly – similar to the well-known lotus effect.
This has two main advantages:

  1. Dirt particles, which would normally stick due to moisture, are carried away with the droplets.
  2. Limescale and water marks form much less frequently, significantly reducing the need for cleaning.

Glass façades are constantly exposed to the elements: rain, dust, exhaust fumes, bird droppings. Without a coating, much of this adheres to the surface – making the glass look dirty and requiring regular cleaning.
The nanopool coating creates a hydrophobic, dirt-repellent surface. Water droplets roll off and take the dirt with them. Even on heavily used or hard-to-reach façades, cleaning effort is measurably reduced – fewer cleaning cycles, less chemical use, lower costs.

Unlike conventional sealants, it doesn’t form a “layer” in the traditional sense but bonds with the material on a molecular level.
